Working Group on Euro-Atlantic Security

Working Group on Euro-Atlantic Security initiates a new and constructive cooperation agenda between parliamentarians within the Euro-Atlantic region on renewed conflict tension as part of the Parliamentarians Network’s focus area The Euro-Atlantic geopolitical area is witnessing disquieting renewed tensions and a loss of confidence in institutions and regimes that have for years served to stabilize the formerly volatile area.

From October 19th to October 21st, EWI’s Parliamentarians Network for Conflict Prevention (PN or Parliamentarians Network) organized the first visit of a select group of parliamentarians and members of the PN Working Group on Euro-Atlantic Security, to Moscow for a series of policy dialogues. Established in May 2010, the Working Group aims to: build trust and confidence between parliamentarians from the Euro-Atlantic Area; overcome the renewed tensions; and enhance collaboration in addressing traditional and new security challenges in the region. The group counts among its members parliamentarians from NATO member countries and Russia, as well as experts on Euro-Atlantic Security issues.

Knut Fleckenstein, MEP and Chairman of the Delegation to the EU-Russia Parliamentary Cooperation Committee in the European Parliament, recently spoke with the Parliamentarians Network about positive developments and challenges for the EU-Russia relationship.

German Parliamentarians recently created the sub-committee on Civil Crisis Prevention in the German Bundestag. This sub-committee is a unique set-up among national parliaments of the European Union member states and is one part of the so-called “Action Plan Civil Crisis Prevention, Conflict Resolution and Peace Consolidation” of the German Government. The German Parliament held its third annual debate on the implementation of the Action Plan at the end of January.

The Parliamentarians Network recently spoke with Roderich Kiesewetter MdB, Spokesperson on Civilian Crisis Prevention and Networked Security of the CDU/CSU parliamentary group and Spokesperson on Disarmament, Arms Control and Non-Proliferation, about these and other developments.
